The high voltage across the battery is necessary when the battery's state of charge is low in order to rapidly recharge the battery. This results in reduced life of the electrical circuitry, higher operating temperatures and wasted energy which must ultimately come from the primary fuel source used to operate the engine. However, these electrical loads must also operate at the higher voltage supplied when the generator system is on.
